MY STORY
I was born in Charleston, West Virginia, and raised by a hard-working, blue-collar family. My mother has worked for over 40 years, providing social services in the City of Charleston. My father is a laborer who is also a former professional boxer. With my family’s resilient mindset, I obtained an academic scholarship to West Virginia University. While at the university, I also became a varsity cheerleader. During my tenure on the team, I was named an NCA Collegiate All-American Cheerleader. Later in life, I was inducted into the WVU Athletic Hall of Fame. As an athlete, I obtained a Bachelor of Science in Biology and was awarded a full academic scholarship to West Virginia University School of Medicine.
After medical school, I completed my residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at West Virginia University Hospitals. In private practice, I have excelled as a national speaker, educator, and leader. Based on my success, many would assume that my confidence penetrated every aspect of my life. Unfortunately, that assumption is far from the truth.
During my teenage years, I became very insecure and ashamed of my vulvar skin or what I refer to as the Private Face. I was unable to groom my bikini line without experiencing painful bumps. As you can imagine, a groomed bikini line is a requirement in the cheerleading world. In my family, we didn’t openly talk about “women issues.” Therefore, I suffered in silence.
Over the past 16 plus years as a practicing OBGYN, I realized that many women of all walks of life struggle with figuring out the right way to groom their Private Face. Their efforts and my own have been my driving force to creating a custom intimate skincare line and custom and treatment algorithms for the Private Face. Unfortunately, the Private Face is just a glimpse of a historical problem. The biggest realization in my career is that many women suffer in silence with a host of “female issues” because of the taboo around discussing the female body. Not only does this lead to shame and embarrassment, but it also fosters ignorance and miseducation. Because of this taboo, too many women prolong seeking medical care. With my mother’s heart for service and my father’s warrior mentality, I consider myself a warrior for women. I chose to fight for all women in various arenas. I firmly believe that the most valuable tool in a woman’s journey to wellness is education. As the old saying goes, “when we know better, we do better.”
